Merry Christmas!

December 25, 2005 8:45 pm

Merry Christmas everyone!

This is our second Christmas in Yucatán. Since we are great traditionalists, we decided to follow up our rotisserie chicken Thanksgiving with steak and shrimp Christmas. Three ribeyes and a big bunch of shrimp cost less than a ham or a turkey. Good stuff!

This last week were were able to see 2 hearing ladies accept the Lord at one of our weekly Bible studies! Keep praying, the Lord is working.

Update – November 22

November 22, 2005 10:26 pm

We had a wonderful meeting in Guadalajara. Though there was some sickness while we were there, everyone had a great time of fellowship. I think the illness actually forced us to slow down and really get some much needed rest.

I returned home in time to get ready for our weekly Bible study with the Deaf. What a wonderful evening! We had 2 new Deaf. Add that to the 2 that have been coming but not yet saved and we have almost doubled from our original 5 to 9. The 2 new people are teachers at the school. One other teacher said he would like to come soon too. Pray for them. The three teachers are Janeth, Laura and René. René is the one who has not attended yet. The other two who have been coming, but not yet saved are Ana Isabel and Pati.

Guadalajara

November 16, 2005 8:24 am

This week (November 15-21) I am in the second largest city in Mexico. Guadalajara is the home of Missionaries Gary and Ann Layne. They are hosting a conference for Missionaries and Pastors who work with the Deaf in Mexico.

This is one of three meetings a year that we gather for. But with camp being canceled this summer, we have not been together since the Spring. This will be a week of encouragement and learning.

Thank you for your prayers as we strive together for the souls of the Deaf throughout the country.

Hurricane Wilma

October 21, 2005 3:42 am

We have gotten some questions as to whether Hurricane Wilma will be near us. Thank you for your concern.

She will be hitting about 3 hours east of us, but then is supposed to turn to a northeastern track. If that happens, then she should not be much of a factor for us except for some rain. If she does not make the turn and continues on a northwesterly track, then things will be a little rough here. But like Emily, which came through earlier in the year, she would go well enough to the north to only be mild.

Cancún, on the other hand, will be badly hit from this storm. Pray for any people and missionaries you know in that area.

Update – October 17

October 17, 2005 2:49 pm

We have been praying for an opportunity to work with a 9 year old girl and her family for quite some time. They live in a village about 30 minutes south of Mérida. I have been able to start meeting with her family and working with them and a few friends on learning sign language. I am spending about 2 hours a week with them and look forward to the day when we can report her salvation.

I sent our October prayer letter talking about the 2 different groups of Deaf we have here in the city and how we had not had much contact with this second group. Just after that was sent we had a young man come to our Bible study from the other group. Pray with us that Luís will be able to help us reach into this whole new sphere of influence.

Here is our October letter. Inside you will read about:

  • One year anniversary of being here in Mérida
  • Summer Trip: Deaf Camp under water
  • More Deaf contacts

This letter is several weeks late due to our computer being down. Thankfully we are up and running again.

Update – September 28

September 28, 2005 10:25 pm

Our new Bible study is going well. We have one new girl (29 years old) that has faithfully attended and have a couple of others that have come off and on.

We learned this week that one of our faithful girls to the Bible study is at risk each week she comes. If her father gets home from work before she gets home from our Bible study, the mother takes a beating for it. The mother does not dare come herself, but the daughter has been faithful and was saved in July. Pray for this situation and that God will help us handle it properly.

I have suspected for some time that many of the Deaf young people would like to attend our Bible studies, but that something has been holding them back. One of our team members, who is a parent of one of the Deaf children, told us this week that the other mothers have decided that they do not want their children coming to our studies. They have various reasons for this, but many could be solved if we could make some friendships among the parents stronger than just the casual contact we have now. Pray with us as we seek for ways to build these relationships.

Our computer has been down for a few weeks. We are waiting on a part to arrive so we can get out or next prayer letter.

Update – September 10

September 10, 2005 10:03 pm

Things are picking up quite well for us now that school has started again. We have had some visitors to our new Deaf Bible study. We are expecting more this week. These have come because of added exposure at the Deaf school here in town. I have been given many more students this semester and I look forward to being able to influence them to come to the studies with us.

I recently had the opportunity to lead 2 young men to the Lord (7 and 12 years old)! They have started coming to our church. It is good to be able to influence them in their young walk with the Lord.

The Lord has been blessing us wonderfully. We know your prayers have a part. Please keep praying!
